Kantaris Media Player

Kantaris Media Player

  • Free and open source media player
  • Plays almost all multimedia formats without the need for installing any separate codecs
  • Connects to an online subtitle database, finds subtitles that are a perfect fit to the played media
  • Plays RAR-archives without first extracting the media
  • Beautiful music visualizations
  • Plays DVDs and audio CDs
  • Kantaris 0.3.5 released

It’s been almost exactly two months since version 0.3.4 and this is what I’ve been working on.

    • Playback of all audio-CDs should now finally work.
    • Seeking in MPEG-2 files fixed.
    • Much better RAR support. Can now play most rar-archives containing video instantly without any unpacking and being able to seek in the file like it’s unpacked. I think this is a unique feature that no other player for windows has. I know that XBMC for Xbox can do the same.
    • Automatically identifying a movie and listing subtitles for it available at opensubtitles.com also automatically downloads the subtitle of choice. This might also be a unique feature.
    • A few other bug-fixes.

Getting support for subtitles with character encoding which are different from western standards and not Unicode proved to be more difficult than expected so I wasn’t able to finish it in this release. Hopefully a new version with this feature added will be out already this week.

Also I like to mention that Kantaris was featured on TechTV on a show named “The Lab with Leo Laporte” and they said some very nice things about the player. The show airs in Canada and Australia

You can see the video here: (the part about Kantaris is around 2:30 into the video)
